The National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) fosters long-term collaborations between universities and NSF’s Division of Materials Research (DMR)-supported centers. It enhances research opportunities through faculty and student exchanges, student mentoring and professional development.
The careers pathways of Dr. Christopher Reyes and Dr. Scott Barrett, both graduates from Texas State University (TXST), provide one of the best examples of the impact that PREM has had on materials science workforce development:
Chris Reyes was a product of 2011-2017 TXST-Research Triangle PREM
After his PhD at Duke, TXST’s MRSEC partner, Dr. Reyes co-founded a start-up
Scott Barrett is a product of the 2021-2027 TXST-UT Austin PREM
Reyes became a mentee of Barrett and ultimately hired him into Materials Hybrid Manufacturing
