An Optical/Electrical System for Micro Droplet Screening

The undergraduate researchers at Fort Lewis College developed a microscope and an optical signal detector circuit to quantify single bacterium in microdroplets from environmental water samples (top).

The developed microscope and the detecting circuit have a great resolution and sensitivity which helps with boosting the resolution and sensitivity of bacteria detection for environmental engineers.

The team will perform a thorough testing of the system and publish all the technical details as an open-source droplet detector.

The Partnership for the Education and Advancement of Quantum and Nano-Sciences (PEAQS) is a collaborative effort between Fort Lewis College (FLC), Norfolk State University (NSU), and the Science and Technology Center for Integration of Modern Optoelectronic Materials on Demand (IMOD). This initiative aims to advance cutting-edge materials science while fostering diversity in STEM through research, education, and mentorship. Leveraging expertise in nanoscale synthesis, characterization, and device integration, PEAQS addresses challenges in nanotherapeutics, nanoelectronics, and thermoelectrics.
